About Dr. Michael Bither

For more than a decade, Dr. Michael Bither has treated patients at his Freeport, Maine-based geriatric practice. The owner of Southern Maine Geriatrics Associates, he works with elderly patients in assisted living communities, nursing homes, and skilled care environments. His practice employs five physicians and six nurse practitioners who see more than 950 patients in ten facilities. Dr. Michael Bither holds direct responsibility for teams providing long-term medical care in four locations. He has received certification from the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Medical Directors Association. Prior to opening his practice, he worked as a family physician, medical director, and emergency physician in various communities throughout Maine.

Dr. Michael Bither completed his undergraduate work at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and earned his medical degree in Tuebingen, West Germany, at Eberhard Karls University Medical School. He completed a family practice residency at Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Today, Dr. Bither retains privileges at the latter institution, as well as at St Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston and Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

To stay current in his field, Dr. Michael Bither participates in a number of professional organizations, including The American Geriatrics Society and the American Medical Directors Association.  A founding Member of the Maine Medical Directors Association, he led the group as President for four years. He was also a Board member of AMDA for 3 years.

In his free time, Dr. Bither enjoys spending time with his family and going hiking, hunting, skiing, and fishing.
